Helen & Douglas House children’s hospice to open new store in Stroud’s Five Valleys

19 February 2025

Helen & Douglas House, the world’s first children’s hospice, is opening a new retail store at Five Valleys Shopping Centre in Stroud.

The new store will help to raise funds to provide support for the hospice’s vital services; caring for children, with life-limiting conditions across the region.

The charity also provides support for children’s families, who also require care and support during such difficult times.

The new store will be located in the former Priyanka unit at Five Valleys which can be found on King Street – neighbouring Curio Lounge and EE. The charity will start fitting out their new store in March with plans for opening at 11am on Thursday 3rd April.

The charity, and the children’s hospice movement, was founded in 1982, and it has since inspired 54 other specialist hospices for children across the UK, and more globally.

With 24 retail stores currently in the home counties, the charity relies on money raised at its shops along with donations and fundraising to meet the annual running costs, which amounts to £6 million each year.

Shoppers at the new Stroud location, will directly contribute to the crucial fundraising to help local families.

The store will stock pre-loved finds including high-quality clothing, furniture, accessories and collectable items, featuring well-known brand names. Money raised at this shop will help support local children and their families.

Helen & Douglas House has been recognised as ‘outstanding’ by the Care Quality Commission. The rating is a testament to the charity’s approach – putting the families that they care for at the heart of their work.

Katie Stuart-Cox, Director of Retail and Trading for Helen & Douglas House said “We are so pleased to be opening a new shop in Stroud this April. The money raised at our shops makes such a huge difference to the lives of local families with terminally ill children. A bag of donations to our shop could be worth £40 which could pay for bereavement support for parents who have just lost a child. Everything you buy from us too could help local families cope through difficult times. There are also lots of great volunteering opportunities at our new shop so pop in and find out more once we are open or checkout these opportunities on our website.”

Erica Malpass, Five Valleys Centre Manager, said: “We are delighted to welcome Helen &  Douglas House Hospice to Five Valleys with their latest retail store. The charity provides a fantastic service in our area and we very much look forward to the team being a part of our growing community of stores, businesses and services at Five Valleys.”
